Thousands of years ago, before European settlers set foot on this land, the valley now known as Montagu was an untouched sanctuary. Cradled between towering mountains where the Keisieand Kingna rivers converge, it was a place where water carried life to every root, leaf, and flower. The Xauka Khoi, a branch of the Khoikhoi people, journeyed here from the north of what is now Botswana. Known as “men of men” or “true people,” they followed the stars and the voices of their ancestors, seeking a place where the earth's bounty was abundant and unspoiled. When they entered the valley, they found mountains standing like ancient guardians and rivers that shimmered in the sun. The land was alive with wildflowers and herbs that promised health and relief from illness. They settled where the rivers met, building reed and clay homes that blended with the landscape. The Xauka Khoi were skilled pastoralists, but also keepers of deep botanical knowledge. The valley became their living apothecary. They discovered plants of remarkable value: buchu with its fragrant leaves for infections an digestive ailments, rooibos for calming the mind and strengthening the body, and cancer bush for its powerful restorative properties. Guided by their healers, the Guri, they believed this valley was a gift from the gods, a place where the earth’s magic was concentrated. Generations later, when European settlers arrived and named the place Montagu, they too learned from the Khoikhoi, carrying this knowledge forward. Today, Montagu Botanical Elixirs exists as a continuation of that legacy, a bridge between ancient wisdom and modern craft.
